Technical measures for affected EA 189 diesel engines

The Volkswagen Group has presented specific technical measures for the affected EA 189 diesel engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres.

The measures have been ratified by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany, which is responsible for the type approval of Volkswagen vehicles in the EU.

For the 1.6-litre engine, the solution involves fitting a ‘flow transformer’ directly in front of the air mass sensor. This is a mesh that calms the swirled air flow in front of the air mass sensor and will thus decisively improve the measuring accuracy of the air mass sensor. The air mass sensor determines the current air mass throughput, which is a very important parameter for the engine management for an optimum combustion process. In addition, a software update will be performed on this engine.

The 2.0-litre engine will get a software update.

Thanks to advances in engine development and improved simulation of currents inside complex air intake systems, in combination with software optimisation geared towards this, it has been possible to produce a relatively simple and customer-friendly measure.

The objective for the development of the technical measures is still to achieve the applicable emission targets in each case without any adverse effects on the engine output, fuel consumption and performance.

The necessary service concepts are currently being developed for the various countries. The aim is to implement the software update for the 2.0-litre engines during a recall in the first quarter of 2016. The technical solutions for the 1.6-litre engines will follow after that.

Volkswagen will ensure that the time needed to implement the technical measures is as short as possible, and the work will be done at no cost to our customers. In addition, Volkswagen will contact all customers and endeavour to consider individual customer needs during the implementation of these measures to avoid any disadvantages for the customer such as possible curbing of their mobility.

Up to then, the vehicles remain technically safe and can therefore be driven on public roads without any limitation.
