The Golf GTI. The original hot hatchback.
When the original Golf GTI made its debut in 1976, it created a bit of a stir, and for good reason, too. What Volkswagen did was to completely transform a family hatchback by fitting a powerful engine and giving it the spirit of a real sports car. Little has changed today, because the Golf GTI still has all the practicality and usefulness of the Golf, but with a little extra spring in its step, to the tune of 230 PS. With the latest generation, the Golf GTI is better than ever before.
One of the secrets to the Golf GTI being the best hot hatchback is its turbocharged TSI engine. It produces 350 Nm of torque from as low as 1,500 rpm, and with the amazingly quick gear changes from the 6-speed DSG transmission, the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in a mere 6.4 seconds. The driving profile selector, in combination with the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), gives you access to 5 different modes that you can use to fine-tune the car's performance and handling.
Always copied, never equalled.
Despite its sporty character, the Golf GTI still shares much in common with the Golf, in the form of excellent rear legroom and a large boot. It is also easy to drive and park, has low maintenance costs and comes with all the important safety features you expect. This is what the Golf GTI has always stood for - a grin-inducing driving experience without any compromises.
